Grayson: A Playful Display Font That Elevates Web Design

As a web designer working with small creative brands, I’m always on the hunt for typefaces that bring personality without sacrificing usability. That’s why I was excited to test Grayson—a charming, handcrafted display font—on a recent project for a boutique stationery shop’s landing page. From the moment I dropped it into the hero section, Grayson made a statement. It’s not just a font; it’s a design asset that adds warmth, quirkiness, and authenticity to digital spaces.

First Impressions: A Hero Section That Feels Alive

The first real test for Grayson was in the hero section of the landing page. The client wanted the headline to feel personal and inviting, yet polished enough for a professional brand. I placed “Handmade With Love” in Grayson at 48px, layered over a soft watercolor background. The result? Instant charm. The font’s slightly uneven baseline and playful serifs gave the text a hand-drawn feel that perfectly matched the brand’s aesthetic. It wasn’t just readable—it was engaging. Visitors didn’t just scan it; they paused, smiled, and scrolled further.

Responsive Design: Looks Great on Any Screen

I was curious how Grayson would hold up on mobile, where screen space is precious and readability is critical. On smaller devices, I reduced the font size and paired it with a clean sans serif body font. Even at 32px on a phone screen, Grayson maintained its character without becoming illegible. The spacing between letters stayed open, and the font’s natural rhythm made it easy to read even when used in a button or call-to-action. For web use, this is a big win—especially when you're balancing personality with performance.

Font Pairing: Contrast That Works

One of the most important aspects of using a decorative font like Grayson is knowing how to pair it. I used it exclusively for headlines and accents, and paired it with a crisp, modern sans serif for body text and navigation. This contrast helped establish a strong visual hierarchy. Grayson became the emotional hook, while the sans serif grounded the design in clarity and usability. For a different project—say, a wedding website—I’d consider pairing it with a soft script font for a more romantic feel.

Use Cases: Where Grayson Shines Online

From my testing, Grayson works best in digital spaces where you want a touch of whimsy and warmth. Here are a few ideal uses:

It’s not ideal for long-form content or small interface text like form labels or navigation menus. For those, stick to a clean, highly legible font to ensure accessibility and usability.

Practical Considerations for Web Designers

Before deploying Grayson on a live site, I made sure to check the available web font formats and licensing. The font came with WOFF and WOFF2 files, which are optimized for fast loading and broad browser support. I also tested different weights and alternates to see how they rendered across devices. One thing to note: if you're using it over a dark background or in a button, consider adding a slight text shadow to enhance legibility. And always preview it in both light and dark mode to ensure it maintains its visual appeal.
